Antique Japanese Meiji Period Satsuma Pottery Koro with Mandarin Duck by Hododa (Code 2025)

  • £49500

A very attractive Meiji period satsuma ware koro signed for Hododa to the base. The body features panels formed by sculpted clay lavishly covered in gold. The panels feature birds with a Mandarin duck at the waterside and exotic birds with pendulous flowers to the other. The lid has three heart shaped piercings and is mounted with a shishi lion. There are also decorative handles and three feet to raise the base off the ground. Signed for Hododa under the Shimazu mon and also a partial Satsuma mark. Hododa commissioned pieces from many satsuma makers and thus can be found in a large variety of forms and styles.

Aside some limited wear to the gilt it the high points which is all but inevitable for these pieces it is in very good order. Fine crazing to the glaze as expected for satsuma.
