Antique Japanese Satsuma Blue Ground Moriage Snowfall Plate with Butterfly (Code 1974)

  • £9500

A late 19th or early 20th century Japanese satsuma plate from the Meiji period. It is of slightly dished saucer shape. Gorgeous graduated blue ground and fine white moriage drops making look like a snowy sky. Further chrysanthemum type flowers and green leaves with a central gilded butterfly. The border is of highly decorated form with diaper patterns and further moriage and gilt work. Unsigned, but almost certainly Awata region, a beautifully decorative piece.

Some gilt wear to the rim as common for such examples. Fine crazing which is almost universal for period satsuma ware. Some underglaze darkening, visible to the reverse.
