Antique Large Staffordshire Pottery Hunting Pearlware Frog Mug / Loving Cup (Code 2309)
A large 19th century frog mug with twin handles. This style is usually termed a loving cup, but given the context this one is probably better described as a mug! It has a moulded design to the exterior with gun dogs and game birds. Around there base is a moulded decorative band and it clobbered paint to the rim and around the base. Inside there is a frog painted in black and tan meant to give the unwitting drinker a shock. It would have been intended for beer, cider etc.
The glaze is a pearlware type with blue hints in the accumulations. It dates around 1860, and is unmarked so the maker cannot be determined. The glaze has lots of tiny flecks of blue.
Very good for period. A few short slight stress hairlines descending from the rim, little more than craze lines. Some fine crazing. Minor wear. Minor firing flaws as typical for period.
