Description

A late 19th century Japanese early Moriage style covered jar style vase.  It is of three parts with lid, body and stand.  The cell pattern around the shoulders is in low relief with various patterns in gilt and enamels.  The main body has further cell patterns and two scenes of people with extensive use of gilt.  The stand has feet in the form of elephants heads and the patterning on this is in quatrefoil form.  The lid is particularly interesting with a large pierced knop reminiscent of a a puzzle ball.  There are no marks for identification but it would date around 1880.  It is certainly not a form you come across often and the work on the patterning is particularly meticulous.

Condition

The knop has been re-glued to the lid, either from being broken off, or re-stuck if the original adhesive had failed, there do not seem to be any significant losses.  Some chips to the inside lip of the lid.  Normal wear, some gilt rubbing and some small losses of decoration.  Two of the small lugs around the shoulders of the body look to have been broken off and reattached.  Fine crazing in parts.  See images for overall presentation.
