Antique Pair Bristol Green Glass Decanters - Victorian Flagon Design c1850 (Code 2371)
A very interesting pair of mid 19th century flagon style decanters. While their form is not especially rare they have an unusual feature which helps tie them together as an original pair. The clear glass handles and stoppers share the same amethyst tint. The tint is due to an incorrect mix of mineral during manufacture - likely excess manganese in this case - and would have been corrected for the next glass batch. The point here being these decanters and stoppers were made within a very short time frame of each other and thus we can be confident they have stayed together since being made around 1850, some 170 years ago. It is very rare to be able to accurately tie such items together so tightly.
The decanters themselves are of flagon form with compressed sides. They have neck rings and hand pincered pouring spouts. The handles are of rope twist style and finished at the bases which is more of a Georgian feature, but carried over here to the early Victorian. The bases have been star cut and the stoppers are of lapidary form. They are made of good quality lead glass in a strong Bristol green tone. Although this style of decanter is commonly associated with taverns, the quality of these suggest they were for private use, or perhaps for a higher quality hotel.
A great find and very nice pair for display.
