Antique Qajar Chased Brass Box with Frieze of Therianthropes poss. The Shahnameh (Code 2632)
A very attractive Qajar period small brass box with hinged lid. Unlike most examples it has a frieze of characters instead of just geometric and calligraphic patterns. Some characters are in masks or are perhaps therianthropes. It is possible they take inspiration from The Shahnameh, or from ancient Mesopotamian carvings.
The hinges are shaped and there is a rotating pin catch, typical of Qajar boxes. There is a hole in the pin to allow a small lock or seal to be employed. Mid 19th century period.
Normal age related wear, some softening of the detail through cleaning as expected for age. One foot bent in slightly, but it still stands firm on all four feet.
