Antique Qajar Middle Eastern Chased Brass Sharbat Jug with Thuluth Calligraphic Script (Code 1846)

  • £13500

Description

An early 19th century Qajar brass jug. It has a cylindrical top and a mallet shaped body with a slightly convex base typical of Middle Eastern examples from this period. It is finely chased with detailed patterns and Thuluth style calligraphic script. The handle is brazed to the the body rather than being riveted. This item would have been intended for use to serve drinks such as sharbat. Highly decorative and increasingly scarce these jugs come in varying designs over a long time period while the body shape remains largely similar.

Condition

Good for period. Hand made so construction and finish is not to a factory standard. Normal age related wear. Scratches to the base and some minor knocks, see images for general condition.
