Antique Samson Paris Porcelain Hand Painted Bowl with Rockingham Mark c1835 (Code 0874)
A lovely early to mid 19th century large porcelain bowl hand painted with flowers and gilt devices. It all looks correct for Rockingham, and indeed it has a Rockingham mark to the base, but it was actually made by the Paris factory of Samson. Samson were well known for copying just about every top maker of the period, most were made as lookalike copies, but some like this seem to be out and out forgeries. Interestingly these Rockingham copies are probably rarer than the originals, and are also very well made so it is certainly a fine piece of work in it's own right. It probably dates around 1835-45 and is made in a porcelain body with a hint of blue in the glaze accumulations in the pearlware manner. A great piece of history and a lovely piece of early 19th century porcelain too.
Surprisingly good for period, there is wear to the gilt at the rim and some lesser wear to the gilt on the body but otherwise it is very good. There are some underglaze spots from firing as typical for this period.
