Antique Silver & White Metal Chatelaine Group with Keepsakes Photo Album & Hooks (Code 1674)
A lovely 19th century chatelaine group. This group does not have a chatelaine clip, just the items on the chains as seen in the images. The group appears to be European in origin and perhaps French, Belgian or Dutch. Most of the items are sentimental rather than utilitarian, perhaps suggesting it was owned by a wealthier woman. There are also Catholic oriented pieces suggesting the religious affiliation of the original owner. There is a Leopold II 5 centimes coin, a religious medal with Mary Magdelene and Pope Pius which also has a small additional name tag. There is a folding button hook in the form of a pen knife and a further folding button hook with rope twist outer (marked 900 for the silver grade). There is a lovely miniature photograph album with 'Chers Souvenirs' (Dear Memories) which contains four images, two male and two female. There is a George and the Dragon medallion and an adorable puss in boots ornament which given the sentiment of this tale is an interesting choice. Finally there is an open work vinaigrette in a diamond shape and formed with a lily flower and leaf, this hinges open to access the wood block.
The one button hook is stamped 900 for the silver grade and I have also checked some of the other pieces which also test as silver. Some of the items such as the coin are not silver. Overall it is a fascinating group and what a shame we will never know the history behind these gifts and sentimental keepsakes.
Normal wear and aging. I have left them in the patinated state as this seems to suit the items, they would of course polish should you want to do this. No chatelaine clip. Close up images give best view of wear and condition.
