Antique Staffordshire Pearlware Navette Shape Hand Painted Fruit Bowl/Dish (Code 0873)
An early 19th century pearlware navette shaped dish. It has an earthenware body but is quite finely potted and is very likely from the Staffordshire region. The decoration is hand painted and not dissimilar to that found on porcelains of the period. The shape suggests it was probably for fruit or similar and either used on a buffet or at the dinner table during dessert courses. No makers marks which is usual at this period (c1830-40) but a lovely looking item.
Surprisingly good for period, some losses to the paint but otherwise it has survived remarkably well. Nice blue tint to the glaze in the thickened accumulations as expected of pearlware.
