Antique Sterling Silver Basket by James Dixon of Sheffield - Victorian 1893 (Code 2154)
A fine Victorian period Sterling silver basket by the highly regarded Sheffield firm of James Dixon & Sons. It has heart shaped forms to the interior along with a decorative rim and pierced work around the walls. It has a pedestal base with cast detail.
To the underside it has a number of marks. There is the Sheffield hallmark for 1893 with the makers mark and trumpet emblem. Above is the retails mark for Zachariah Barraclough & Sons of Leeds who were a high class silversmith retailer out-letting for some of the best known silver producers in the UK. There are further numbers, probably for patterns or other manufacturing details, and then unusually there is a weight mark for 11.60 oz. Interestingly this doesn't seem to reflect the actual weight (which is heavier) in both ounces or troy ounces. Since as there are no additions and the item is unaltered (and should in fact be lighter due to polishing over the years) it leaves a mystery as to the reason.
Particularly good order for period. Very low levels of wear. Crisp detail and marks.
