The broad, low cabochon displays extensive dendritic inclusions across a pale translucent ground, with dark blue grey and brown branching formations spreading through the stone.  At the size it may have been intended as a trinket box, a snuff box, or even for cosmetics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese naturally occurring mineral inclusions within the chalcedony create the plant like patterns for which moss agate is named. The stone forms almost the entire lid, with a closely fitted mount around its edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lid is hinged at the rear and closes by friction against the body of the box. The interior retains a gilt wash, now showing age related wear.
