Antique Victorian Dome Top Stationery Box by Asprey of London in Coromandel Wood (Code 2674)
A very smart looking Victorian stationery box with dome top lid in the early Gothic revival style. It is in coromandel with brass edging and escutcheon. It was made for and retailed by the famous Asprey store of Bond Street, London and there is a brass plaque with their details in between the hinges to the interior. The lid is lined in blue silk and there are card dividers and liners to the interior. The lid can be locked to keep the contents private.
When acquired the box had some paperwork and these are included. There is a note dated 1841 concerning a business matter, and a list of financial transactions. There is a further postcard of two sailors smoking pipes.
Generally very good, minor surface flaws as expected for period including some shrinkage splits in the veneers. The card dividers have some wear and some appear to be missing. Nicely polished and quite shiny as can bee seen from the reflections of the lights in the images. Lock appears to be working fine.
