Antique Victorian Hand Painted Glass Antarctic Exploration & Sailing Ship Vase (Code 0249)
Description
A wonderful mid Victorian enamelled glass moon shaped vase. The clear body is decorated with gilt and raised white enamel. The star of the show is the enamelled scene which depicts arctic exploration with a sailing ship and a small row boat. It is very nicely painted with great character to the waves, and the scene is framed by bulrushes. There are no makers marks, but the painting of the bulrushes does accord with work done by Richardsons on decanters and other glassware. The date for this (around 1870) also fits with the likely date for this item.
This is the first example of it's type we have ever come across, and it will certainly be very rare or perhaps even unique. A superb opportunity for the collector.
Condition
Minor wear to the decoration, generally very good for period.
