Antique Victorian Mahogany and Gilt Metal Mounted Folding Desk Book Slide (Code 0686)
A Victorian gothic revival book slide with folding sides. These items were often used in libraries and studies for holding a selection of books being worked on or read, there are many designs all following the same configuration but with varying levels of ornamentation. The side panels are mounted with gilt metal panels and studs over ivory plaques. The base wood appears to be mahogany and the slides are also mahogany using a different cut of the wood. The base has green felt. It dates around 1870 and is a nice example of it's type. Please note, this item can only be shipped within the EU.
Hinges and slides working, some replacement screws to the hinges. Splits in the white panels at the ends. Splits in the wood runners where the slides go, probably from warping or rough handling in the past, these appear to have been stablised and are not stopping the action from working. The splits can be seen (images shown) and they are raised from the body so can be felt. There is a small hole in one of the slider base (a screw hole). Base felt is likely a replacement as it is in two sections.
