Antique Victorian Solid Sterling Silver Cigarette/Card Case B'ham 1896 (Code A288)
A late Victorian period solid silver cigarette case with acanthus chasing and curved to fit the pocket. The interior is gilded and both halves of the case are Hallmarked. It has a sprung latch which still works fine and part of the original elastic strapping internally. The front has a rounded cartouche engraved with the initials which are so cursive it is impossible to decipher accurately. The Hallmark is for Birmingham 1896 making this quite an early example of the cigarette case. Of course these today are usually used as card cases or kept as collectables as modern cigarettes would not fit. The makers mark is for John Millward Banks who operated out of Birmingham and London. A very nice quality example for the collector.
Height: 8.2 cm
Width: 6.4 cm
Weight: 70 grams (before packing)
Condition: A particularly good example for period. Hinge and latch good. Interior gilt still largely good. Very nicely polished with very light wear for age. Internal elastic perished as expected and one ferrule tab missing from the elastic.
