Antique William Brownfield International Moulded Stoneware Jug - 1862 Exhibition (Code 2434)
A Victorian moulded jug by William Brownfield. This design was produced for the London International Exhibition in 1862, hence the title. The panels are emblematic of art, music, science and commerce which where the themes of the exhibition. The titles are below each of the character panels. The design proved very popular and was a best seller for Brownfields for a number of years.
This design can also be found with a pewter lid and also with the ground in enamelled colours rather than the all white here. The body is stoneware with a white(ish) glaze. It has the makers mark and title to the base along with a registration lozenge with date for 1862.
Generally good, minor wear and some slight kiln dust spots. A couple of slight nicks to the decoration which look to be from firing (air bubble and tiny grit flaws). Handle twisted slight during firing.
