Art Deco Solid Silver Cigarette Case by John Rose - B'ham 1935 Jubilee Hallmark (Code 2140)
An Art Deco period solid silver cigarette case. It has engine turned pattern work to the top and the bottom and a geometric block pattern to the front which doubles as a cartouche for initials. It opens in clamshell style with a spring latch and has a thumb lift to aid opening. The interior is gilded to prevent tarnishing and it is made from quite heavy gauge silver and is heavier in the hand than expected for this type of item.
The case is hallmarked for 1935 which was the jubilee year for George V, and the mark is indeed the jubilee type with the King's head. The makers mark is for John Rose who were located in the famous jewellery quarter in Birmingham.
A nice example with minor period wear as expected. Hinge and latch all fine and working well. The elastics are original, but have perished so are no longer springy.
