Fine Antique Victorian Diamond Panel Mother of Pearl Calling Card Case c1860 (Code 1931)

  • £12000

A particularly good quality Victorian calling card case. It has diamond and triangular shaped panels and the case sides are slightly convex along with rounded edges giving a lovely feel to the item. The mother of pearl is also of particularly good iridescence. The interior has a fabric liner to help keep the cards in good order. The lid is hinged and there is a push button to open the lid. The items were of course intended for use and it was customary to present your card when visiting during the 19th and early 20th century just as we do with business cards today.

This case is part of a recently acquired single owner collection. The predominant feature of the collection is the iridescent quality of the shells, with some particularly fine structural colours of the nacre. The colour and iridescence does of course change with the light and incident angle, so multiple images have been taken to try and give a sense of how it varies, all shot under halogen light.

Minor period wear and slight natural flaws in the material as you would expect. See images for overall exterior look.
