Georgian Antique Moulded Pottery Jug Bacchus/Devil Grotesque Mask Head c1820 (Code 2526)
An early 19th century moulded mask head jug. The face appears to be an amalgam of Bacchus, the devil and perhaps the green man. The body is moulded as a tree trunk and the bosses are decorated with roundel forms. There is silver resist decoration and the remains of yellow paint around the rim. There is a thick pearlware glaze with distinct blue tint in the thicker accumulations
There doesn't seem to be a consensus on where these pieces originate with them variously attributed as Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Sunderland and Pratt ware. The dating does seem to have agreement however at around 1820.
See images for the general presentation and level of wear. The spout has been broken and reglued with small amateurish restorations in the same area.
