Georgian Regency Tea Caddy in Mahogany Wood with Sliding Lids & Patrae - Antique (Code 2265)
A Georgian Regency period tea caddy in mahogany wood with edge banding and box wood stringing. The exterior is of simple rectangular form with nicely figured mahogany. The interior has sliding lids for the tea compartments which is not common. These compartments can also be removed for cleaning. The lids have patrae in the floral style with stained details. There is a central well area for the mixing bowl. The bowl is a replacement and appears to be an early 20th century dessert bowl, and suits quite nicely although is of course the incorrect form.
The box has a lock and key, the lock still works but is a little temperamental which can perhaps be forgiven as it is nearly 200 years old. The base has green baise which is certainly old and may be the original. A handsome box.
See images for overall look. Exterior has some knocks as expected, there are some notches in the lip of the main body. Natural aged crackle effect to the lid which actually looks rather nice. Lock a bit temperamental. Some damaged to one hing area, the latch fitting and one corner of a sliding caddy lid. Mixing bowl is a replacement. Wear to the baise base and internals. Some old repairs to the edge banding. Overall it has a good antique look as can be seen.
