Georgian Silver Toddy Ladle with Twisted Baleen Handle c1820 (Code 2402)
An early 19th century toddy ladle with a long baleen handle having a tight twist at the top and a matching wrythen formed silver end cap. The handle is drilled right next to the cap so it could be hung by a cord. The bowl has a pie crust rim and relatively flat base. The silver shaft is inititalled I*N or (N*I) depending on which way it is viewed. There are hallmarks to the inside of the bowl, although they are too rubbed to read. The style suggests a likely date at the end of the George III period / start of George IV period.
Normal age related wear, light abrasions and minor denting. Hallmarks rubbed. Hairline fracture in handle where it has been drilled, appears stable.
Width: 6 cm ( 2 3/8 inch ) across bowl
Length: 34 cm ( 13 3/8 inch )
Weight: 30 grams (before packing)
Stock Code: 2402 DC20-1
