Japanese Antique Meiji Period Satsuma Ware Pottery Vase with Samurai Commander (Code 1999)

  • £9999

A Japanese Meiji period satsuma ware vase dating around 1880.  This finely decorated example likes comes from the Awata region and uses moriage raised decoration to enhance the overall effect along with giving texture and additional dimension.  The main panels feature characters in opulent garb.  In one scene the seated character seems to be holding a gunbai suggestive of a samurai commander.  There are two lozenge shaped cartouche marks to the underside of the base, these are unfortunately too faint to read, the final character of one is 'zan' so this would have been the makers mark. A fine looking example for the collector.

Small patch of restoration to the rim extending about 4cm with the re-glazing, well done and only really detectable due to lack of crazing at that point.  Otherwise good for period with minor wear.  It has as you would expect the crazing associated with satsuma pieces.
