Kacho-Ga Satsuma Vase by Taizan Yohei 帯山 With Sparrow & Butterflies, Meiji c1890 (Code 2643)
A beautifully painted kacho-ga style Satsuma vase by award winning artist Taizan Yohei IX. It features a sparrow and large bold blooms, the white petals are raised enamel. There is also a colourful butterfly to the reverse with a further black and white example both with raised enamels. There is a decorative collar with extensive gold and raised enamel. It is signed to the base for Taizan Yohei and also has his impressed mark. This denotes the item was made at his own kiln prior to its closure in 1894, after this time he decorated blanks from other kilns.
Taizan Yohei was one of most renowned Satsuma artists and was particularly fond of the kacho-ga style which is quite different from most of the Satsuma producers. He won numerous awards including at the Chicago World Exposition in 1893 and his pieces feature in famous collections and museums including The Met.
Good for period, minor wear and some small small scuffs to the body. The crazing is intentional.
