Mamluk or Safavid Islamic Antique Pottery Middle Eastern Fritware Jar - Blue Eye Design (Code 1828)

  • £39500

Description

A Mamluk or possibly early Safavid pottery vessel likely used as a storage jar. Thick glaze accumulations due to firing in an uncontrolled kiln. Fritware body with unglazed base and unglazed interior rim. It is decorated with four 'eyes' around the rim and has further devices including floral sprigs and others which almost look as if they are calligraphic patterns (although not containing legible script). Dates to the 16th or early 17th century, and of course a rare piece given the date.

Condition

Roughly made and fired in an uncontrolled kiln so it has glaze voids and various faults (as do all such examples). Glaze cracks and crazing, hairline body cracks and discolouration. See images for general exterior condition.
