Pair Antique Japanese Porcelain Kutani Ware Quail Vases by Watano Sei, Kobe (Code 1913)

  • £39500

A pair of very nicely decorated Japanese Kutani ware porcelain vases dating to the Meiji period. The features very finely painted detail around the shoulders and neck in a particularly expansive palette for Kutani. There are moulded handles to the neck surrounded by decoration including fan shapes. The main bodies are painted with Japanese quail and floral designs, again very finely painted for Kutani ware. They are signed to the bases for Watano Sei and they probably date to his period in Kobe around 1876-80. Very attractive examples for the collector.

Decoration very good for period with very little wear even to the gilt. Some minor glaze flaws from firing. Some patches of crazing with slight darkening. One vase with slight nick to the foot rim and some scuffing to the white glazed areas.
