Kinkozan Satsuma Ware Pottery Vases Kyo-Yaki Kyoto Very Large Pair - Meiji (Code 2059B)

  • £32500

Description

A very large pair of Kyo-yaki pottery vases by Kinkozan. They are of baluster form and decorated with female characters in domestic type poses. The rim and foot rim are left unglazed. There are also birds above with raised white enamel detail and repeating patterns around the rim. The bases are interesting as the pattern around here is perhaps reminiscent of the seashore. They are signed to the sides of the vase rather than the bases with the marks reading - Great Japan, Made by Kinkozan. Kinkozan were one of the most well known of the Japanese pottery producers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were most noted for Satsuma ware of which these Kyoto style examples are a subset. Rare to find such a large pair like this. Meiji period, late 19th century.
