Rare Antique Parnall & Sons Toleware & Mahogany Wood Coffee Bin Box Shopfitting (Code 1631)
An amazingly rare survivor of the mid 19th century, this retail coffee bin was made by Parnall & Sons of Narrow Wine Street in Bristol. This large box is in toleware with mahogany wood lids and the toleware is painted. It has an engraved plaque with their name to the front and a metal plaque to the reverse. Parnall were famous shopfitters of the 19th century starting around 1820 and later in the company history they made aircraft components. You do see Parnall items come to market from time to time, generally small pieces and for tea along with scales and weights, but I've not come across something like this before. The lids flip to allow access to the tin lined bins. It is quite a sizable item so is large enough for a boutique shop display piece as well as a collectors piece. It also comes with an old wooden stamp (per Pound) which was likely used during retail of the goods.
Probably best to see the images for general condition. Toleware and paint with lots of wear, corrosion etc especially to the reverse where most paint is missing. There has been repainting, the Coffee is mis registered compared to the original, all repainting is old and done for practical use, not for restoration. Hinges working fine, wood with normal wear and tear. This was a commercial item so has had a very long history of being used and presents as such.
