Rare Lionel Edwards Copeland Spode for Soane & Smith Fox Hunting Bowl c1925 (Code 2043)

  • £5500

Description

A rare early 20th century small bowl with original scenes by Lionel Edwards. The body is earthenware with a cream glaze and the rim has been decorated to represent wood grain. This bowl has two scenes to the outer face, they are entitled 'Full Cry' and 'Gone to Ground' to the base which are from the Beaufort and the Hursley hunts respectively, both in England. The bowl ia around the size of a tea bowl, however is was perhaps more likely intended for sugar on the breakfast table.

The piece is from a set of wares exclusively commissioned by Soane and Smith, a (now defunct) high class retailer in London's Oxford Street. The work was commissioned in 1922 and the registered design was granted in 1923. They employed Lionel Edwards to design the scenes for which he produced a set of water colour paintings, and WT Copeland to manufacture the items. Lionel Edwards was a famous water colour artist of the period, a member of the Royal Institute and illustrated books including Black Beauty and Lorna Doon. He was also a passionate fox hunter personally, and this stayed with him throughout his artistic career.

Few of these pieces now come up for sale aside plates, suggesting the numbers produced were low. They would also have been very expensive when new due to the cost of commissioning such a highly ranked artist to produce. A fifty three piece service from Tetworth Hall consisting largely of plates and tea ware was auctioned by Christie's in 2008 realising £5250 on the day.

Condition

Generally very good order, a couple of tiny glaze losses to the rim.
