Rare Lionel Edwards Copeland Spode for Soane & Smith Fox Hunting Cigar Box c1925 (Code 2042)

  • £27500

Description

A particularly rare early 20th century table box with original scenes by Lionel Edwards. The body is earthenware with a cream glaze and the rim has been decorated to represent wood grain. The main scene on the lid is of a huntsman cantering with the hound pack along a lane. It is entitled 'The Find' to the reverse which is a scene depicting the Atherstone Hunt in Warwickshire, England. The box base also has four more scenes - The Last Draw; The Hound; Homeward; The Fox. This box was likely for serving cigars or cigarettes at the table when it was fashionable to do so in the 1920's. Most of this series is tableware and there are references from the major auction houses of a variety of designs, but this is the first box we have ever seen offered for sale, so it may be an almost unique opportunity to acquire this for a collection.

The piece is from a set of wares exclusively commissioned by Soane and Smith, a (now defunct) high class retailer in London's Oxford Street. The work was commissioned in 1922 and the registered design was granted in 1923. They employed Lionel Edwards to design the scenes for which he produced a set of water colour paintings, and WT Copeland to manufacture the items. Lionel Edwards was a famous water colour artist of the period, a member of the Royal Institute and illustrated books including Black Beauty and Lorna Doon. He was also a passionate fox hunter personally, and this stayed with him throughout his artistic career.

Few of these pieces now come up for sale aside some plates, suggesting the numbers produced were low. They would also have been very expensive when new due to the cost of commissioning such a highly ranked artist to produce. A fifty three piece service from Tetworth Hall consisting largely of plates and tea ware was auctioned by Christie's in 2008 realising £5250 on the day.

Condition

Some wear to the paint to the box base rim where the lid sits. Light age related crazing and minor wear to the base. Minor underglaze spots from production as typical for such pieces.
