Satsuma Ware Vase - Dignitaries & Brass Mounts - Antique Japanese Meiji Period (Code 2605)
A large Meiji period Japanese Satsuma ware vase. It is decorated with visiting dignitaries separated over two panels. Between are smaller panels of chrysanthemum flowers. Around the neck are formal patterns with cells and raised enamel work. The vase has a brass base and rim, the base is bolted through the bottom of the vase so it will not hold water. There are no makers marks which is relatively common for Satsuma ware.
Some wear to the decoration including rubbing of one of the dignitaries faces and general gilt rubbing. The connecting bolt to the base appears a replacement, likely as the original rusted away. Crazing to the body - an intentional feature of Satsuma.
