Victorian Relief Moulded Jug Hannibal / Elephant Battle - Buff Stoneware Antique (Code 2482)
A mid 19th century Victorian period stoneware jug. It is thought the design is a depiction of Hannibal fighting a battle and it features war elephants, horses and soldiers. Although most of the Victorian moulded jugs are known and referenced this design remains a mystery and has not been firmly attributed to a factory.
The body is quite a fine stoneware with a buff glaze and the design is busy and detailed. The handle has a dolphin terminal at each end and there are further frieze above and below the main scene with marine creatures and lions heads. The base does not even feature any numbers. Quite a scarce item and has the extra interest of being a mystery make.
Particularly good for period. Minor firing flaws as expected. Foot rocks slightly on a flat surface due to minor warping in the kiln.
