Vintage Hand Painted Heraldic Crest Oxford University Latin Motto on Oak Shield (Code 1012)
A mid century heraldic plaque of shield shape and in oak wood. It is hand painted with a Red Cross of England over a gold/yellow ground and has a central book with the text 'Dominus Illuminatio Mea' which is Latin for 'The Lord is my Light', and this motto is used most famously by Oxford University. The Oxford University crest is not the same as this however, although it may represent one of the individual colleges which make up the University. The painting is hand done and there is a name and date to the reverse in ink pen, 'Jan 1966 John Clifton'. A fine looking traditional piece which would look great in a study etc.
Some aging to the paint which in this case is beneficial as it gives a wonderful antique look. Slight losses to the paint and slight knocks.
