Antique 19th Century White & Yellow Metal Boulle Ware Desk Seal / Candle Box (Code 1535)
A very attractive and unusual 19th century boulle ware box. It is of quite small proportions and has a lid which folds towards the front and a candle holder. This would have been for a desk and the candle could have been used to melt sealing wax or it could have been used as a small travelling candlebox for writing/reading. The compartment inside would have contained matches and candles and there is a rough sandpaper patch inside the lid for striking matches. It is unusual in that the metal fretwork is white and yellow metal rather than the usual all brass. The foot is outswept a little and the base has a decorative embossed covering. The candleholder is brass and screws into the top section. To the right as viewed head on is a small metal nodule, perhaps for attaching a seal fob by chain or similar. A superb item for the collector.
Normal wear and aging with some oxidisation of the metal as expected. Some losses of the shell inlay. Minor faults in the metal and wear to the base.
