Antique Chemists Scientific Box with Contents, Mahogany Wood Victorian/Edwardian (Code 2218)
A chemists box in mahogany wood dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period. The exterior is of dovetail construction with an overhanging lid and matching base. The interior features a top tray with four divisions and has a selection of equipment. Underneath is a further two division tray which has a selection of bottles, most of which have contents, and finally there is an open area below.
The bottles have typical chemists compounds, and are likely later than the box. Most are labelled but of course it is not possible to be certain the labelling is correct, so they should be considered as collectable items only, and of course must be kept out of reach of children and handled with due care.
A very nice find, chemists boxes seem quite scarce and the contents add extra interest.
Box is well used and has developed a charming patina with knocks and scratches etc, and a small surface repair to the left side. Lid is faded a little compared to the body from light exposure over the years. Some of the felt interior has degraded and has stains. Most bottle have compounds and seem in good order. Lock works but is temperamental, the locking pin may be a replacement.
