Antique Frosted Glass Carafe / Decanter with Russian Etched & Gilded Crown (Code 2372)

  • £12500

Description

An intriguing carafe of slender and elegant form.  It boasts a frosted body with clear rim and gilt banding and the base has been ground and polished concave to remove the pontil scar from blowing.  There is a large etched and gilded crown to the body with initials below.  The crown is perhaps most in the Russian style and this also fits with the overall design of the piece.   The initials are open to interpretation, I can't pick out anything exact from the flowing intertwined form.  It is certainly of good quality and a handsome piece.  The size suggests it was for stronger drinks or for personal use.  Date wise it would appear to be mid to late 19th century.

Condition

In good period condition with some wear to the gilt at the rim.  Minor wear to the body and base, a few air bubbles trapped in the glass from production as common for antique pieces.
