Antique Indian/Ceylonese Silver Repousse Lidded Box with Village Scene c1880 (Code 2258)
A 19th century Indian lidded cylindrical small box or jar. It is unmarked but tests as high grade silver and is probably Sterling. The lid has scallops making it into a crown type shape and there are animals and other details between the channels. The main body has a continuous frieze of a village scene with people, houses and a cow.
It is an artisan hand made piece and has a lovely charm about it. Notice the piece of silver strengthener to the inner rim of the lid to keep the joint together. Probably southern India or Ceylon c1880.
Hand made so has typical inconsistencies as expected for an artisan item. Minor wear. Lid rim joint visible - held safe by internal strengthener.
