Description
An antique sterling silver small box. It dates to 1900, the final year of Queen Victoria's reign. It is of repousse form with the sides having scenes from Aesop's Fable, The Fox & Stork. These are very detailed with the ground having texture. The top has a scene of revelry with two men and a lady in a tavern scene. The inside of the box is gilded. At this size it may have been used for pills or possibly for snuff.
The front of the box has a hallmark from the Birmingham assay office with date letter for 1900. The makers mark is probably for Thomas Hayes.
Condition
Good for period with some age related wear, most obvious to base. A bit of wear to the gilt interior. Some softening of the detail to the lid from decades of cleaning.
