Art Deco Silver Powder Compact - Engine Turned - V Brittain Birmingham 1946 (Code 2228)
A late Art Deco silver powder compact with an engine turned pattern. It is of round form with hing and latch in the straditioal style. The lid has a cartouche for engraving, this remains blank. It dates to the first year post WW2 when production of luxury items was still very limited. The makers mark is probably for V Brittain & Co of Vyse Street in Birmingham in the famous jewellery quarter.
The compact opens to reveal a mirror inset to the lid and an open compartment for the powder below. When compacts were in popular use you could of course easily buy the powder in various sizes to fit into them. Inside the base there is the hallmark for Birmingham 1946 with the makers stamp.
Good for period, minor wear with no significant faults. Hinge and catch good.
