17th Century Antique Italian (Venice) Tin Glazed Wet Drug Syrup Jar / Albarello (Code 2604)
A tin glazed earthenware wet drug jar for syrup. It is decorated in blue and has a painted label for syrup of chicory. It also has a heart shaped cartouche with initials, these were commonly for the owner. This style of syrup jar is generally attributed to Venice although there are also some referenced as from Montelupo a little further to the Southeast and they are dated to the 17th century, likely the middle period. Such jars were used by apothecaries for dispensing treatments, this style with spouts contained liquids and syrups which were poured out.
The jar is of bulbous form with short spout which would have been corked originally. The label is painted by hand with scroll ends. The handle is of twin strap form with a decorative terminal. The foot is unglazed and the clay is a fairly hard earthenware.
Smashed and re-glued in fairly amateur form. Chip to rim but no substantial pieces lost. Glazes losses throughout including the interior.
