Description

Welo opals - sourced from the Wollo Province of Ethiopia - are known for a play of colour that shifts with the light, and this stone demonstrates that quality well: greens and orange-peach tones move across the surface as the ring turns. The opal is facet cut rather than cabochon, an unusual treatment that adds brilliance to the colour play. At 8.9mm x 7mm and approximately 1.2 carats.  Six small diamonds are set lower in the shoulders, flanking the stone. Inside the band: a full Birmingham hallmark for 9ct gold with date letter for 2012, from the TGGC collection, which used welo opals extensively in this period.

Opal is the birthstone for October.
