An antique 9ct gold brooch and pendant set with an oval Limoges porcelain panel decorated with a romantic couple scene in warm gold tones. Marked Limoges France to the reverse. The mount is unmarked but tests as 9ct gold.

Description

An antique brooch and pendant combining a 9ct gold mount with a hand painted Limoges porcelain panel. The oval panel is decorated with a romantic scene showing a gentleman kissing the hand of a lady, rendered in rich gold tones against a blue ground. The porcelain is marked Limoges France to the reverse of the panel, confirming its French origin.

The gold mount is finished with a decorative border framing the panel. The brooch carries a pin fitting with a rollover safety catch to the reverse, and is also fitted with a small suspension loop and connecting ring, allowing it to be worn as a pendant as well as a brooch. The mount carries no hallmarks but tests as 9 carat gold throughout.

Limoges porcelain has been produced in the Haute-Vienne region of France since the late eighteenth century, making use of the local deposits of kaolin clay. Miniature painted panels set into jewellery became fashionable across Europe during the nineteenth century and into the Edwardian period, particularly for pieces with sentimental or romantic subjects.

Condition

Please read carefully. To the reverse of the porcelain panel, near the bottom edge, there is a flake chip approximately 5mm in diameter. This is not visible from the front in normal wear. Otherwise in good order with little sign of wear. A bright white reflection visible in some photographs is from the studio lighting and is not present on the piece.
