Summary

A 9ct gold dress ring set with a central oval blue moon quartz of approximately 3.5 carats with concave pavilion cuts, flanked by two pear cut natural ice zircons of approximately 0.7 carats each, on bifurcated shoulders with decorative basket mounts, fully hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office in 2007. Retains the original Gems TV certificate.

Description

The central stone is a blue moon quartz - an oval facet cut to the table with concave cuts to the pavilion, a technique that creates an unusual optical effect: the stone appears to shift between a milky, almost cloudy body colour and a warm golden fire as the light moves across it. The effect is more pronounced in person than photographs suggest, and a video is available showing the stone in motion. The quartz originates from Brazil and weighs approximately 3.5 carats.

Flanking the main stone are two pear cut ice zircons, each approximately 0.7 carats, sourced from Tanzania. Ice zircon is a natural earth-mined gemstone and should not be confused with cubic zirconia - the two are entirely different materials, zircon being a naturally occurring mineral with its own optical properties and a history of use in jewellery predating the development of synthetic alternatives.

The band has bifurcated shoulders in the vertical axis, the split running up to the head where the stones are lifted on open decorative basket mounts to allow light through from below. The construction is well considered - the mounts do real work in terms of how the stones perform in light rather than simply holding them in place.

The ring was released by Gems TV and retains the original certificate of authenticity.
