Summary

A fine Edwardian Royal Worcester vase, dated 1908, hand painted with a rural thatched cottage scene in tonal browns with gilt heightening. Body shape 1109, originally introduced c.1885. A well executed example of the naturalistic landscape decoration for which Worcester is particularly admired.

Description

The principal face of the vase carries a hand painted scene of a rural thatched cottage, rendered in a warm palette of tonal browns and brought to life with gilt heightening throughout. The decoration continues to the reverse, where a smaller cottage and trees complete the composition, giving the piece interest from every angle.

The neck, twin handles and foot rim are finished in sage green with gilt highlights, and the rim section features decorative moulding with a Persian influenced profile - a design detail characteristic of the 1109 body shape, which dates in its original form to around 1885. The combination of the classical form with the pastoral English subject matter is very much in keeping with the Edwardian taste for refined domesticity.

Royal Worcester mark in puce to the underside, with date cipher for 1908.

Condition

Very good order for the period. Slight wear to the gilt in places, consistent with age. No damage or restoration. There is a minor colour wash line to the lower body just above the foot rim where the artist's brush has left a faint trail - not visible in normal display.
