Description

An antique 18ct gold and platinum diamond solitaire ring dating to around 1920.

The natural diamond is an old mine cut of approximately 0.20 carat, with the softly cushion shaped form, deep pavilion, fine girdle and flat culet typical of quality diamonds cut during this period. It has a faint warm yellow tint and an estimated clarity of VS1, appearing loupe clean when viewed through the centre with some minor inclusions around the edges.

The deeper proportions and individually arranged facets produce attractive flashes of fire from within the stone, giving it a character quite different from a modern brilliant cut. The diamond is held in a six claw platinum coronet setting, raised above finely tapered knife edge shoulders and an 18ct yellow gold band. This construction places the emphasis firmly on the diamond.

Inside the band it is marked PLAT and 18ct, together with an AH maker's mark contained within conjoined circles. The maker has not been conclusively identified.

Diamond is the birthstone for April.

Condition

Remarkably well preserved for a ring of this age, with minimal period wear. The diamond remains securely held and the coronet setting, knife-edge shoulders and band are all in very good order.
