Summary

A fine antique 18ct gold cluster ring set with a natural blue sapphire surrounded by old mine cut diamonds, in a pierced buttercup head with diamond set lozenge shoulders. Late Victorian or Edwardian.

Description

The ring is built around a central natural blue sapphire of approximately 2.75mm diameter - a pale, slightly soft blue of the kind associated with Ceylon stones, and characteristic of the period. Around it, a halo of old mine cut natural diamonds sits within a scalloped buttercup head, each stone individually set in its own petal mount. The open backed construction allows light through from below, giving the cluster a brightness that closed settings cannot match.

The shoulders are each set with a single old cut diamond in a lozenge shaped mount - a detail that extends the ring's decorative line without overcomplicating it. The band is solid gold throughout, and inside carries an older style British 18ct gold stamp.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September.

Supplied in a vintage presentation gift box.

Condition

Lovely antique condition with only light surface wear consistent with age. All stones present and securely set. Mount and band in good usable order.
