Antique 9ct Gold Cufflinks - Engraved Foliate Scrolls - Birmingham 1923/24 - C3036
Summary
A pair of antique 9ct light rose gold cufflinks with oval panels engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, hallmarked Birmingham 1923/24 and bearing the maker's mark AJ, probably for Albert Jackson of Albion Street.
Description
A handsome pair of early 20th century 9ct gold cufflinks, made in a warm light rose gold and finished with finely engraved scrolling foliate decoration. Each cufflink has two oval panels joined by chain. The fronts are worked with a dense pattern of hand engraved acanthus leaves, scrolls and curved motifs - the lines confident and crisp. The reverse panels are plain.
The maker's mark AJ is likely that of Albert Jackson, a Birmingham goldsmith located on Albion Street and active during this period. The cufflinks carry full Birmingham 9ct gold hallmarks dating to 1923/24, struck clearly to the reverse panel of each cufflink.
Engraved gold cufflinks of this quality are increasingly difficult to find in wearable condition. These are a practical as well as a collectable piece.
Condition
Good usable antique condition. The engraved decoration remains crisp and well defined, the chain links are secure, and the panels are in good order with light age related surface wear only.
