Description

A handsome Art Nouveau dressing table mirror combining a sculpted oak frame with a sterling silver mount worked in repousse. The silver decoration features marigold type flowers and buds in the sinuous, organic style characteristic of the period, the forms following the shaped outline of the frame rather than sitting within a conventional border. The overall silhouette has the flowing, asymmetric quality that distinguishes good Art Nouveau work from the merely decorative.

The mirror plate is a custom cut thick bevelled piece, still in very good order. The mirror stands on an easel back fitting, allowing it to be displayed on a dressing table or chest of drawers without additional support.

The hallmark is struck for Birmingham 1906 and the maker is Lawrence Emanuel, one of the well established silversmiths of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter and a name associated with quality decorative silverware of the period.

Condition

Good condition for the period. The repousse silver decoration remains well defined. There is some sharpness to the edges at the two main floral elements, with the possibility of minor historic damage at these points, though the cut-out styling of the design makes this difficult to determine with certainty. There is one small hole in the silver to the top large floral element. The easel back hinge is stiff. The mirror plate has slight foxing and minor marks to the silvering but remains perfectly good to use.
