An antique burr walnut snuff box dating 1820-50, with a fluted barrel body, shaped end caps, contrasting wood stringing and a brass diamond inlay to the lid.

Description

This rare form snuff box is made in a long, rounded barrel form, the burr walnut showing lively figuring across the fluted body and shaped end caps. Contrasting wood stringing follows the ridges and traces the joins between the body and end caps, while a small brass diamond is set into the lid as a restrained geometric accent.

The hinged lid opens on a jigsaw hinge and reveals a lined interior. Elongated snuff boxes are known, but this combination of a fluted barrel, pronounced end caps, interlocking hinge and banded stringing is an uncommon form, set apart from the more familiar rectangular and oval boxes of the period.

Condition

Good antique condition overall. The hinge is in good working order. Some contrasting stringing is lost at one end cap join, and there is a small split at the left side of the opening. Please study the photographs for overall condition.
