Antique Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) White Metal/Silver Offering Bowl with Elephants (Code 2116)

  • £12500

Description

A late 19th or early 20th century white metal bowl, it very much resembles the Northern Indian designs of the period, but the floral work and elephant motif suggests it is a colonial Ceylonese (now Sri Lanka) example. Note the flowing design of the floral pattern eminating from the flower pot. There are four motifs bosses each with the same design of elephant, palm tree and building. The base is plain and there are no marks.

Testing shows the item to be made from a low grade of silver, probably around the 50% mark which is not uncommon from the Indian region. Silver is mined locally in Sri Lanka and the Kandy region was most noted for production and is likely where this item is from. Typically they were made as offering bowls, but of course would have been purchased by tourists and exported to a limited extent and used for whatever purpose as desired.

Condition

Good for period, wear is limited for the age, some scratches to the base of course. A nice piece for decoration or use.
